Russell T Davies return and the comedy-horror fun of Widow’s Bay - Screen Babble recommends

It might be summer - but there’s plenty of quality stuff on the gogglebox!

Is a TV show ever good enough to make you subscribe to a new subscription service? That is the question the intrepid Screen Babble crew tackle in the latest episode.

Host Kelly Crichton and Matt Mohan-Hickson are back and talk all things television once again. Summer might have arrived, but there’s still plenty of reason to stay indoors and put the googlebox on.

First up, Matt excitedly brings his new TV obsession to the table - Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay. He does his best job to convince Kelly and the audience to dive into this strange mix of comedy and horror - that manages to actually make you laugh and jump!

It raises the question of whether a show can be good enough to make it worth subscribing to a new platform simply to watch it. Fortunately, Matt also has found some other gems on Apple’s own streamer.

Kelly is also reporting live from the Glastonbury field - even though it is a fallow year - to give us all a run down on which festivals can be watched from the comfort of our homes this summer.

We might not have new Glasto to enjoy this year, but there are plenty of stacked line-ups to enjoy. From TRNSMT to Isle of Wight - and listeners can discover exactly how to tune in.

Finally, the Screen Babble crew tries to tackle the question of whether TV can diagnose the State of the Nation. It is a trend that has started to sweep across British tele in recent years - from Mr Bates vs the Post Office to Adolescence.

Russell T. Davies is back with yet another take on the issues facing us right now with Tip Toe, which explores the festering rage bubbling under the surface of a normal street. But be warned, it is a hard watch.

By contrast, the BBC’s adaptation of the stage play Dear England is coming at similar topics from a far different angle. Exploring Gareth Southgate’s role as England’s ‘great unifier’ and if his focus on mentality can fix the Three Lions.

For people who aren’t fans of the England football team, you do get to relive the recent heartbreaking losses in Euro finals. So there is something for everyone!

Screen Babble is also available on YouTube to be watched - as well as found on your podcast platform of choice. Follow this link here and don’t forget to like and subscribe!
