37 plays in one night? Reduced Shakespeare Company coming to Wakefield next month
From a YouTube cooking tutorial of Titus Andronicus to Hamlet performed entirely backwards, the Reduced Shakespeare Company is bringing all 37 of the Bard's plays to a Wakefield stage
An internationally acclaimed, fast-paced comedy smash-hit is heading to Yorkshire next month as the Reduced Shakespeare Company brings its frantic energy to Theatre Royal Wakefield.
The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) sees a remarkably industrious cast of just three actors tackle all 37 of the Bard’s famous comedies, histories, and tragedies, after enjoying a massive nine-year run in London’s West End, filming two television specials, and performing in more than 20 countries worldwide.
The troupe is bringing a version of the production that has been completely rebooted and reimagined for 2026.
Fast, furious, and gloriously absurd, the production promises a modern-day twist on traditional theatre. Audiences can expect to see iconic masterpieces completely turned on their heads, featuring irreverent segments such as Hamlet performed entirely backwards, and Titus Andronicus restaged as a chaotic YouTube cooking tutorial.
The show relies heavily on sharp wit, physical comedy, and a healthy dose of fast-paced improvisation.
Senior Communications and Programming Manager Emma Proctor from Theatre Royal Wakefield highlighted that the production offers something for everyone, regardless of their familiarity with classic literature. "Suitable for audiences of all ages, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is a brilliantly chaotic and outrageously improvised performance that is full of fun and laughter.
"We want to encourage as many people as possible to come along. Even if you’re not a classic lover of Shakespeare, this production will have you thinking differently. It is simply a joyous way to spend an afternoon or evening."

The show will run from June 25 through June 27 at the historic venue.
Theatregoers will have the option to choose from multiple showtimes, with both standard evening performances and afternoon matinee presentations available across the short three-day run.
