While the summer crowds have long since departed, they leave behind a landscape of rugged cliffs and misty harbours that feel beautifully still - ethereal, if you’ve picked up a word calendar in your Christmas stocking this year.
Whether you’re looking to blow away the cobwebs with a salty sea breeze or find a quiet corner of the coast to reflect on the year gone by, these destinations offer the perfect restorative escape.
Each of these gems is just a short drive from the city, and we’ve included the approximate time it would take to drive to our selections - but as always, come the 11th hour, it might pay to check what the roads are going to be like to get a more accurate time should you decide to venture out; we’d suggest the AA, but many of our locations are also accessible by train or by bus.
We just went with cars for pure convenience.
So grab your thickest scarf, pack a thermos, and prepare to discover the North's most atmospheric winter scenery with these 15 incredibly—if not brisk—picturesque seaside town and village walks.

1. Robin Hood’s Bay (North Yorkshire)
Arguably one of the most atmospheric spots on the Yorkshire coast. In winter, the steep, winding fishing streets feel like something out of a Dickens novel. The village's unique layout means every twist in the narrow alleyways reveals a new view of the sea, while the low winter sun creates long, dramatic shadows against the stone cottages. 🕒 ~1 hour 45 mins | Stuart Bell

2. Whitby (North Yorkshire)
Whitby hits differently in the winter; the crowds are gone, and the Gothic ruins of the Abbey look even more striking against a grey January sky. Climb the 199 Steps for a panoramic view of the harbour before heading to the West Cliff for a long promenade walk. 🕒 ~1 hour 30 mins | Brian Murfield

3. Filey (North Yorkshire)
For wide-open spaces and total tranquillity, Filey is the place. It’s much quieter than its neighbours, offering a brisk walk along Filey Brigg—a long, narrow peninsula with spectacular views back toward the white cliffs of Flamborough. 🕒 ~1 hour 20 mins | Heather Palmer

4. Saltburn-by-the-Sea (North Yorkshire)
Saltburn has a unique "faded glamour" Victorian feel. Walk the length of the Victorian Pier (the most northerly in the UK) and take the coastal path up onto the cliffs to watch the hardy winter surfers tackling the North Sea swells. 🕒 ~1 hour 15 mins | Google
5. Lytham St Annes (Lancashire)
Heading west to the Fylde coast is often a faster route for those in West Leeds. The promenade at Lytham is beautifully maintained and much calmer than nearby Blackpool, perfect for a flat walk past the iconic Lytham Windmill. 🕒 ~1 hour 15 mins | Submitted Photo: Submitted

6. Staithes (North Yorkshire)
A historic fishing village tucked into a hillside, offering a maze of narrow streets and a sheltered harbour. It’s a photographer's dream in the winter light, famously known for its association with Captain Cook. 🕒 ~1 hour 40 mins | Helen Hotson - stock.adobe.com
