How Brits are celebrating New Year's Eve in 2025 - including Leeds locals
As the clock ticks down toward 2026, the traditional New Year’s Eve night out is undergoing a major makeover.
While the classic pub countdown isn't going anywhere, a new study by SeatPick suggests that Brits are ditching the "same-old" for activities that are either incredibly raucous or incredibly subdued.
There appears to be no real in-between.
New research indicates that approximately 42% of British adults plan to celebrate away from home this NYE, with the shift in spending is set to provide a massive £505 million boost to the UK hospitality sector, as Brits trade traditional nightclubs for ‘experiential’ evenings.
This surge in spending comes at a critical time for the industry.
While the 'Golden Quarter' usually provides a lifeline for venues, the way we spend that money has fundamentally changed, which has seen a move toward 'value-driven experiences'—where people are happy to spend more per head, but only if the night offers something unique, such as immersive themes, live performances, or high-end dining.

However, this transition isn't without its casualties. The rise of the 'experiential' night out is happening against a backdrop of a declining nightclub sector, which has seen nearly 30% of UK venues close since 2020.
In fact, Yorkshire has been one of the hardest-hit regions in the country, losing almost half of its traditional dancefloors in the last five years.
It’s no longer just about a sound system and a bar; it’s about 'competitive socialising'—activities like high-tech darts, indoor mini-golf, and cinema takeovers that offer a structured, memorable alternative to the standard night out.
So, according to SeatPick, what are we as a nation doing for New Year’s Eve, and what are those in Leeds expected to do this year?

What did the study say Leeds residents will be doing on New Year's Eve 2025?

While the rest of the country is heading to the warehouse, Leeds is heading to the movies.
According to the data, the cinema is the #1 searched New Year's Eve event for Leeds residents. Our city is one of 32 across the UK where the big screen is the preferred way to ring in the New Year.
From major blockbusters like Avatar: Fire and Ash, to unique double-bills and festive classics at the historic Hyde Park Picture House, Leeds locals are clearly looking for a more cinematic start to 2026.
