What is Yorkshire Day and why is it celebrated?

Held on August 1 every year, Yorkshire Day celebrates the county's heritage, history, landscape, culture, and its people.

First celebrated in 1975 by the Yorkshire Ridings Society, it became an official event in 1985. Since then, a different town or city is chosen every year as the official host of the event.

The host town or city has the honour and prestige of being the official Yorkshire Day town or city for a full calendar year. This is marked with the handing over of the Yorkshire Day flag from council to council on the day, each council adding its coat of arms to the flag to record their year.
