Chancellor joins hundreds at first NSPCC Leeds carol service in a decade

The Chancellor of the Exchequer joined more than 300 people at the NSPCC’s Carols by Candlelight service at Leeds Minster this week, helping to raise vital funds for the children’s charity.

Rachel Reeves, MP for Leeds West and Pudsey, attended the concert – which was last held in the city ten years ago.

The service was preceded by a Christmas craft market and also included a joint reading from Emmerdale’s Laura Norton and Charlotte Bellamy and songs from comedian, actor and classical singer, Lloyd Griffith.

Three Leeds-based choirs - Headingley Voices, Free Range, and Cockburn Community Choir/Cockburn Vocals – also performed, with the audience joining in with carols over mulled wine and mince pies.

Funds raised by the event will support the charity’s Childline service, which has a base in Leeds city centre, and which offers round-the-clock support for children and young people across the UK.

Rachel Reeves, MP for Leeds West and Pudsey said: “It was a pleasure to attend the NSPCC’s carol service – the first locally in over a decade.

"A huge well done to the choirs, performers and organisers put on a brilliant service in a fantastic venue, raising awareness and funds for an incredibly important cause.”

Abi Baker, NSPCC Community Fundraiser, said: “We are hugely grateful to Laura, Charlotte, Lloyd, the amazing choirs and our wonderful volunteers, without whom this event would not be possible. The Minster looked amazing, and it was great to welcome the Chancellor to such an incredible event.

“Sadly, children need support from our Childline service every day of the year, so it remains a lifeline to young people across the country.

"That’s why fundraising events like this are so essential, and we would also like to thank everyone who came along and enjoyed the show.”

Rebecca Shaw, Childline Volunteer Engagement Lead for the region, said: “Our Childline counsellors are amazing, and are there to offer support children on calls, by email or through online chats at Christmas and throughout the year.

“It’s always free for children to contact us, and counsellors will even be available on Christmas Day. It costs around £4 to answer every contact so events like this are hugely important to ensure we can be here for young people whenever they need support.”
