Dewsbury-based YY16 Foundation launches global mission to support children through sport
A simple father-son chat about a pair of football boots that no longer fit has grown into a remarkable international mission.
The YY16 Foundation — a newly established charity dedicated to supporting children through sport — has opened its first sports academy in Ghana, giving orphans the chance to flourish both on and off the pitch.

The idea began with Dewsbury-based Yousuf Patel, who spent two years developing the concept before travelling to Ghana for four days that he describes as “life-changing”. There, he played football with local children, offered mentoring, and experienced first-hand the impact that sport can have on young lives.
“Our goal is to use sport as a bridge, to give every child, no matter where they come from, a chance to dream,” said Yousuf Yakub, reflecting the foundation’s belief that opportunity should have no borders.

The charity is already gaining momentum across West Yorkshire and beyond. Kick Off Dewsbury, a popular indoor sports centre, has stepped forward as the region’s collection point for donated sports items.
A growing social media campaign has also connected the foundation with partners in London, High Wycombe, Manchester, Oldham, Leeds, Batley and Dewsbury.
Looking to the future, the YY16 Foundation aims to work closely with grassroots clubs, professional academies and schools throughout the UK.
As part of this expansion, the organisation is recruiting school-aged children to serve as YY16 Ambassadors.
Their role will be to raise awareness, inspire their peers, and help gather unused football boots, trainers and other sports equipment for children in need around the world.
