Leeds AVSEDplus marks first anniversary of dementia support

Aireborough-based charity AVSED proudly celebrated the first anniversary of its Dementia Activity Service, AVSEDplus.

Launched by AVSED to build on its long-established work in the community, AVSEDplus was created to support people living with dementia and memory loss, as well as their families and carers.

Operating every Tuesday and Thursday between 10am and 3pm, AVSEDplus provides full-day sessions that combine social connection, engaging activities and practical support.

Members take part in a wide range of dementia-friendly activities, enjoy live and interactive entertainment, participate in gentle seated exercise to support health and wellbeing, and share hearty, home-cooked meals – all designed to promote wellbeing, routine and enjoyment.

The service costs £50 per day, which includes a two-course dinner and afternoon tea, making it an accessible and affordable option for local families. In its first year, it has quickly become a lifeline across the area.

By offering a space where people living with dementia can meet others, stay active and feel understood, AVSEDplus helps reduce isolation while supporting independence and confidence.

For carers, the service provides peace of mind and much needed respite knowing their loved ones are spending the day in a supportive, professionally run and compassionate environment.

None of this would be possible without the incredible team behind it. AVSEDplus Coordinator Gina and Dementia and Inclusion Assistant Amanda lead each session with warmth, professionalism and genuine care, supported by a dedicated group of volunteers who bring energy, patience and compassion to every day.

Looking ahead to year two, the team is not slowing down. They are exploring the possibility of opening a third day to support even more local people and are preparing to launch a new peer support group for carers later in April, recognising that supporting families is just as important as supporting those living with dementia.

Reflecting on the anniversary, Gina said: “In just one year, we’ve seen the difference a safe, engaging service can make - not just to those living with dementia - but to their families and carers too. As demand continues to grow, we’re committed to making sure no one feels alone.”

One year on, AVSEDplus is already demonstrating the powerful difference community-led support can make, and if the first year is anything to go by, the second promises to be even more impactful.
