Leeds mental health charity given £1,500 boost by homebuilder

Barratt and David Wilson Homes has donated £1,500 to Leeds Mind, which provides mental health services for people across Leeds and West Yorkshire.

The charity, located close to the Leeds-based housebuilder, has been developing and delivering quality mental health services with, and for, people in the region for more than 50 years.

Every contribution, including the donation from Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ Community Fund scheme, goes directly into supporting people in the local community. Just £10 can fund a place in a group creative wellbeing session and £60 could pay for an hour of one-to-one counselling, whereas £100 could enable four people to access group support sessions and £1,000 could fund 20 counselling sessions.

Marie-Louise Robinson, Corporate Fundraiser at Leeds Mind, said: “Support from individuals, businesses and funders is crucial. As a local and independent charity, we rely on community and corporate generosity to deliver our services.

“This support allows us to respond flexibly to arising needs – such as the ongoing mental health impact of the cost-of-living crisis – and to innovate with projects that respond to those needs.

“We understand the value of good mental health and the importance of people’s experiences in shaping mental health support.”

Leeds Mind offers a wide range of services including counselling, peer support, suicide bereavement support, employment support, creative wellbeing and mental health training. Part of the national Mind network, it is deeply rooted in the local community and tailors its services to meet the needs of those it serves.

Moving forward, the charity aims to expand its reach to underserved communities, enhance trauma-informed care and strengthen partnerships across health, education and social care sectors. It is also continuing to co-design services with the people who use them, ensuring they reflect real needs.

Marie-Louise added: “Our work is essential in helping individuals recover from periods of mental health difficulties and live independently. We aim to reduce stigma, promote mental wellbeing and ensure that everyone in Leeds and West Yorkshire has access to the support they need.”

Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ donation came from its Community Fund scheme via The Barratt Redrow Foundation, which is designed to support national and local charities, large and small, across the UK to leave a legacy in the communities in which the housebuilder operates.

Gavin Birch, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Yorkshire West, said: “We are proud to support Leeds Mind in its fight to provide mental health services to communities across Leeds and West Yorkshire.

“We encourage anyone struggling to reach out to the local charity, or to Mind. No-one should go through difficult times alone and Mind, along with 100 or so local Minds, help provide a much-needed sense of community.”

Anyone struggling and in need of support is encouraged to reach out to Leeds Mind. Similarly, to get involved through volunteering, fundraising or simply starting a conversation about mental health, visit the website at Leeds Mind.
