Leeds teenagers take part in adventures at new group

Due to demand from Leeds teenagers who want to get outdoors and take part in activities and adventure a new Explorer Scout Unit has opened.

The Leeds Templars Young Leader Explorer Scout unit has quickly grown to 30 members and is a specialist unit that delivers a structured youth leadership training programme for 14–17-year-olds to help them learn new skills.

A spokesperson said: "Whether it’s communication, confidence, leadership, teamwork, first aid, planning or programme delivery, the unit is helping young people to learn new skills that can be used in applications for apprenticeships, college, employment, university or fulfilling the community service element of their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

"They are quickly putting their new skills into practice by helping to deliver weekly programmes for Squirrels (4–5-year-olds), Beavers (6–7-year-olds), Cubs (8–10-year-olds) in local Scout Groups across the area.

"They will all be having fun, being part of a team and always having a plan B up their sleeves."

Scouts offers more than two hundred activities, from outdoor adventures and creative arts to community projects and technical challenges, from hiking to building robots.

Dwayne Fields, adventurer, TV presenter, and Chief Scout said: “It’s so important that young people have a chance to get outdoors and to feel wet grass under their feet and a little mud on their hands.

"Living and working together with others at camp and on outdoor activities helps build an adventure spirit, respect, and grit - all key life skills.”

In a recent poll 94 per cent of Scouts said they had developed useful skills, 95 per cent said they’ve tried activities they haven’t tried before and 85 per cent said they are happier since joining.

There are also opportunities for adults to join in the fun and make all the difference to young lives.

Matt, Lead Volunteer for Leeds Templar said: "Volunteering with Leeds Templars is a rewarding way to develop your own potential while helping young people gain the skills they need to dream big.

"We offer flexible roles to suit your lifestyle, ensuring you're part of a supportive team where you can share your passions, have fun, and feel proud of the positive impact you're making on our community.’’

The Scouts, bring people together and build stronger communities. But most of all, they help young people see that anything’s possible.

The Leeds Templars Young Leader Unit meet in Garforth and Crossgates. To join or help, email the team at: [email protected] to find out more.
