Dewsbury pub rewards designated drivers

As people in Dewsbury will be all too aware, the train station is completely closed for the whole of June due to works on the Transpennine Route Upgrade.

However, the pub on the station, The West Riding, remains open as usual and in the absence of trains, the pub is extending a goodwill gesture to those who make sure their friends get to the pub by offering the designated driver free soft drinks.

The West Riding’s manager, Danny Munt, said: “We want to recognise those who take one for the team and drive to the pub while the trains aren’t running.

"It’s people like that who not only make sure that their friends and family don’t miss out, but keep businesses like ours going while managing the challenges of these essential works.

"They are the heroes of their groups, and we think that they deserve a couple of free drinks!”

Throughout June, designated drivers can enjoy two draught or cordial soft drinks on the house when they visit.

There’s no change to the pub’s event schedule while the station is closed, it’s business as usual with live music, a pop-up food event, and Sunday dinners on offer and fans of heavy engineering can even watch works going on from the best vantage point – windows looking directly onto the platform!

Highlights in June include El Toro Loco playing a Father’s Day ‘Dad’s Rock’ special on Sunday 21st, former Michelin-starred chef, Adam Rasburn, hosting a pop-up Italian food event on Wednesday 24th, and a full programme of ‘Platform 3’ live music every Friday. There’s even a Dolly Parton tribute on Saturday 27th from Beebi Dell as part of the monthly country & western-inspired Saturday Social programme. Regular events including Sunday dinners and the Monday quiz continue as usual and, of course, the pub will be showing England World Cup games for the footy fans.

The train station car parks are also mostly closed during the works, but the pub has struck a deal with Kirklees Council and reserved the spaces directly in front of the pub for customers plus the Wellington Road West Library Car Park over the road is open as usual.

The West Riding is the current CAMRA Pub of the Year and Cider Pub of the Year for the Heavy Woollen branch so non-drivers are spoilt for choice on cask and keg beers and ciders.
