Unusual ingredient to treat dental decay in pets soars in popularity in Leeds

A veterinary practice in Middleton, Leeds has prescribed more than double the amount of products with an unusual ingredient that treats dogs and cats for dental disease and bad breath in 2025 compared to 2024.

Harrison Family Vets has seen a 136 per cent increase in the number of clients opting for seaweed-based treatments to help with poor oral hygiene in pets which can lead to painful infections, tooth loss, and even systemic health problems affecting the heart, liver and kidneys.

Seaweed, especially brown kelp, helps pets’ teeth by releasing compounds activated by saliva that break down existing plaque and prevent new build-up, reducing tartar and freshening breath naturally, often through specific enzymes. It can often be added as a powder to food for a safe, natural oral care boost.

Group clinical director, James Harris, at Harrison Family Vets, said: "Dental disease is one of the most common issues we see in practice, and it often goes untreated until it’s severe.

"Regular dental care at home and vet checks are critical for a pet’s overall health, but the use of seaweed-based products and feed can also help reduce plaque, tartar and bad breath naturally, providing a game changing tool for pet owners to keep their beloved pets healthy."

Harrison Family Vets stocks a variety of seaweed-based dental products and natural oral care solutions to reduce plaque, tartar and bad breath in cats and dogs.

It also stocks the Virbac dental diet range, which includes seaweed in its small dog and cat ranges to limit plaque and tartar formation and freshen breath.

James added: "Nothing is as effective as daily brushing, but we understand that’s not always possible and we’re seeing more pet owners turn to products that can help maintain oral health.

"Seaweed-based products are a natural, effective option to complement brushing and regular veterinary checks. When used correctly, it can make a real difference in preventing dental disease and keeping pets comfortable and happy."

Harrison Family Vets encourages all pet owners to schedule regular dental checks and discuss the best oral care routine with their vet, which usually includes brushing, diet and seaweed-based supplements.

Tips from Harrison Family Vets for maintaining pets’ dental health include:

  • Brushing pet’s teeth daily with pet-safe toothpaste.
