Wakefield hospice given £3,000 donation

Barratt and David Wilson Homes has donated £3,000 to The Prince of Wales Hospice, a charity providing specialist care to people with a life-limiting illness.

Operating across Wakefield and the Five Towns, The Prince of Wales Hospice supports adults over the age of 18, offering care for both visiting out-patients and those within its specialist 24‑hour ward.

The hospice also extends its support to carers and families, providing wellbeing services and bereavement support. Each year, it helps more than 1,600 local people.

Adrian Greenwood, Fundraising Manager at The Prince of Wales Hospice, said: “We were incredibly grateful to hear Barratt and David Wilson Homes wanted to support the hospice with this donation.

“Hospices across the UK are currently in crisis in terms of funding, with some having to reduce services and make redundancies. Donations like this help to ensure we are able to keep running our vital services.

“Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ Community Fund initiative is fantastic and truly makes a meaningful difference to the communities and charities it supports, including The Prince of Wales Hospice. On behalf of everyone at the hospice, I’d like to say a huge thank you to Barratt and David Wilson Homes for choosing to support us.”

The Prince of Wales Hospice provides free care, but only around 35 per cent of the cost is covered by the NHS. It therefore needs to raise £3.5 million a year through donations, its charity shops, and its commercial catering company, The Caring Kitchen.

The developer’s donation of £3,000 donation will cover the cost of 120 hours of nurse care, helping to support local patients and their families.

Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ donation was made as part of The Barratt Redrow Foundation Community Fund initiative, which is designed to support national and local charities, large and small, across the UK to leave a legacy in the communities in which the housebuilder operates.

The Barratt Redrow Foundation is celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2026. Since its launch, it has committed £20 million to charities and good causes, supported over 2,000 different charities, and is estimated to have directly impacted 100,000 young people each year.

Gavin Birch, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Yorkshire West, said: “We’re incredibly proud to support The Prince of Wales Hospice.

"The care it provides is vital to our community and we hope our donation gives the team a boost and may encourage others to support this incredible charity.”

David Wilson Homes has just launched a new development in Pontefract near The Prince of Wales Hospice, named Castle Syke Grange.

Barratt Homes is also soon to be launching two developments in Pontefract, Sandy Gate View and De Lacy Mews.
