Woman's inspiring health transformation started in Rothwell

When Amy joined Slimming World in early June, her motivation wasn’t vanity, it was survival.

Living with fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis in her spine, her body had become a source of relentless pain.

Walking just a few metres left her breathless and everyday movement was a struggle.

“I was so overweight, it was difficult to walk just a few metres,” she recalls. “I was out of breath and in constant severe pain.”

The catalyst for change arrived unexpectedly during a short trip with friends. Surrounded by people who moved with ease, she later looked back over the photos and her heart sank.

“I looked back on the photos and hated the sight of myself. I was disgusted at myself.”

Her autistic son’s blunt questions only confirmed what she already knew deep down.

“Alongside my brutally honest autistic son regularly asking why I was so fat, I knew I had to start looking after myself.”

That moment of painful self-recognition became the spark she needed. She turned to Slimming World and has got started with her own life-changing journey.

In just a few months, Amy has lost nearly three stone. For many, that would be an amazing achievement in itself, but for Amy it is the start of a complete transformation in her health. The relentless, whole-body pain that once overshadowed her days has started to ease.

“Movement now, after almost a three stone weight loss, is much easier,” she says.

She estimates “a good 50 per cent pain reduction,” especially in her lower back, hips, and knees, and for the first time in years, she feels in control of her body rather than trapped inside it.

Simple joys have returned. “I can take the dogs for a walk without being in too much pain,” she says proudly.

Swimming, a form of exercise that once drained every ounce of her energy, now leaves her feeling strong instead of depleted.

“I can swim much further than I used to and still have some energy left to get dry and dressed afterwards.”

Her mental health is improving too as she explained: “Anxiety and depression is a lot more manageable and my energy levels are way higher.”

With less pain and more mobility, she feels hope again. Hope that her body will continue to get stronger rather than decline. “Now I am confident that I can do my usual walks,” she says, reflecting on fears she once had of becoming unable to walk at all.

One of her proudest achievements is reducing the amount of daily pain medication she needs. “I have also managed to reduce the amount of analgesics I take each day which I never thought would be possible.”

Her progress has been inspiring not only to fellow members, but to her Slimming World Consultant as well.

“I am incredibly proud of Amy,” says Caroline. “From the moment she joined group, she showed such determination, even on the weeks when her health made everything feel harder.”

“Watching her confidence grow week by week is always one of the loveliest parts of my job. She walks into group differently now; taller, brighter, and with so much more belief in herself.”

Caroline has supported Amy through setbacks and celebrated every success. “Her resilience amazes me. Even when pain, stress, or caring responsibilities make things difficult, she never gives up. It’s a privilege to cheer her on.”

Slimming World also provides Amy with the structure and support she desperately needed. “The most important bit for me is staying to group and getting the much-needed support and inspiration,” she says. Convenient Slimming World meals from Iceland help on tough days when cooking was impossible. “They’ve been a game changer.”

Today, Amy moves through life with renewed strength, freedom, and hope. She feels lighter not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. She has reclaimed her independence and rediscovered pride in herself.

“Slimming World has really helped me turn my life around,” she says.

And Caroline agrees wholeheartedly: “She’s a shining example of what can happen when someone believes in themselves, and is surrounded by a group of likeminded people who share that belief in her too.”

Groups are held at Rothwell Baptist Church, LS26 0PG every Thursday morning, starting at 7.30am, 9am and 11am
