'We got it wrong': Leeds-founded viral bakery announces Covent Garden store closure

Viral bakery announces store closure

A Leeds-founded bakery has announced it is closing down its Covent Garden store after moving from Yorkshire.

Popular bakery Get Baked, which has been a huge hit online, closed its Headingley store in February; citing a “significant rise in rents and rates” after their lease had come to an end.

Owner Rich Myers said that at the time that they opened “it was a requirement of the landlord that the lease was personally guaranteed”.

In a social media post earlier this week he announced: “We’re closing down our Covent Garden store.

“Get Baked has over the last five years enabled me to do some bucket level things - I’ve written a book, had international pop ups, signed a deal for a second book, done more international pop ups - the list of fulfilling and fun **** that I always dreamed of doing is endless.

“I am unbelievably grateful for all of that, but I’d take actually feeling a sense of self worth, on my own, without it all, any day of the week.

“So Covent Garden didn’t work - we got it wrong. The location was wrong, the vision was wrong, it was commercially a bad move, and we’ve closed it.”

The business, which is best known for indulgent sweet treats such as ‘the Bruce’, a 24-layer chocolate cake, has attracted popularity online, with more than 340,000 followers on Instagram and five million likes on TikTok.

Yorkshire Evening Post reported earlier this year as readers took to social media to voice their concerns about the closure of the Headingley store.

Georgis Holland said: “Find new premises! It’s that good it will work anywhere.”

Nick Stanley added: “So sad to read this. We love Get Baked.”

Meanwhile Sawsan Demnati added: “I am heartbroken.”
