Moving tributes to Rob Burrow as Leeds locals call for a statue in his honour
Two years after his death Rob Burrow still leaves a lasting legacy in Leeds and beyond 💖
Leeds locals have paid moving tribute to Rob Burrow on the second anniversary of his death - as they call for a statue in his honour.
The Rugby League legend left behind an incredible legacy both on and off the field. From his years tearing through defences at Headingley to his campaigning for Motor Neurone Disease following his heart-breaking diagnosis.

Tuesday (June 2) marked two years since Rob’s death and the Yorkshire Evening Post readers, together with the city, have come together to remember him.
In a tribute on social media, Leeds Rhinos wrote: “Hard to believe it’s two years since we said goodbye to Rob Burrow, he continues to inspire us every day especially in our support of the MND community.”
On the YEP Facebook page, one person wrote in a glowing tribute: “Sadly missed by everyone what a man, massive, true legend and never forgotten. My granddaughter is a week old today and she will know all about Rob when she gets bigger. Love you Rob Burrow.”
Another said: “If I bumped into him at Headingley or Kirkstall he always had time for a chat, a lovely man and a wonderful Player RIP Rob. Thinking of Lindsey and the family on this difficult day.”
A reader wrote: “He was an inspiration.” Another added: “Very brave man.”
Asked to share their favourite memories of Rob, our readers had plenty. One wrote: “We have too many to mention...but THAT try in the final had to be up there! Absolute legend.”
Another said: “Every time he got the ball and weaved and ducked through all the opposition and scored a try. So glad he was a Rhino!”
Even rival fans joined in, with a Bradford Bulls supporter saying: “My only memories are of him tearing our defence apart, but as a Bulls fan, I was proud to be there on the day he played in that testimonial game at Headingley.”
Leeds locals also joined in calls for a statue to be built in the city to honour Rob. One reader said: “Him and Kev together hugging as solidarity to us all.”
Another echoed: “With Kevin Sinfield carrying him over the finish line.” One added: “What a lovely idea”.
A YEP reader had some ideas for what the statue could even look like. They explained: “In his prime holding his hands aloft! Next to Kev.”
When it comes to the potential location for it, some suggested Headingley, where Rob enjoyed an illustrious playing career with the Rhinos. However, another offered: “Maybe at the MND centre.”
