In a weather warning to passengers, Northern said: “The Met Office are advising that temperatures today are expected to be above average for the time of year. Highs are forecast to exceed 30°C in London, and similarly high temperatures are likely across central and southern England.

“If you do choose to travel across the Northern network, please check before you travel, prepare for longer waiting times, busy trains and short-notice cancellations.”

What are my rights if my train is cancelled or delayed?

If your train is cancelled, delayed, or rescheduled and you choose not to travel, you are legally entitled to a full refund under the National Rail Conditions of Travel.

This rule applies to all ticket types, including Advance tickets, which are otherwise non-refundable. Unlike standard refunds, you will not be charged any administration fees when claiming due to severe disruption.

If you have already started your journey and are forced to turn back due to a cancellation, you can return to your station of origin and still claim a full refund. All cancellation refund claims must be submitted to the original retailer where you purchased the ticket.

If you still intend to make your journey after a cancellation, your existing ticket will generally be accepted on the next available train running on the same route.

If this delay causes you to arrive at your destination late, you cannot get a refund, but you can claim compensation through the Delay Repay scheme.

Most train operating companies pay out compensation if your arrival is delayed by at least 15 or 30 minutes, with the exact amount determined by the length of the delay and the type of ticket you hold.
