‘Peak for a while’: Disappointing Leeds weather update after hottest day of the year

A blast of warm air has brought the hottest day of the year so far but the Met Office is warning it will be the “peak for a while”.

Leeds and the rest of West Yorkshire have basked in glorious sunshine throughout today (March 18) as temperatures reached a very balmy 18C. In other parts of the country it even stretched to over 20C, the forecaster has said.

However, the weather is expected to cool off after this warm mid-week interlude. The sunshine will stick around, but temperatures are about to dip once again.

The Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said the higher temperatures are because of warm air being dragged up from further south in Europe.

Mr Madge added: “We get this a lot at this time of year, we sometimes joke the warmest day of the year klaxon is going off every day.

“I think this will be the peak for a while today, we are not expecting any further records in the next week or so.”

He continued: “The values that have been reached today will probably be a high watermark for some little time to come.”

The glorious sunshine is set to continue into and throughout the weekend. Highs of 16C are expected on both Saturday (March 21) and Sunday (March 22).

Looking ahead to next week and the end of the month, The Met Office is currently predicting: “Changeable and at times unsettled conditions for many parts of the UK at the start of this period, as areas of low pressure and their associated frontal zones run close to or over the UK.

“These are likely to be most active in the north and somewhat weaker further south, closer to a ridge of high pressure extending northeast from the subtropical Atlantic. There is also potential for a period of widely windy weather during the first part of this period.

“By the turn of the month high pressure may become rather more dominant once again with plenty of dry weather, but with some overnight fog and frost.”
