Met Office issues 13-hour Leeds weather warning as Leeds faces 50mph gusts

A weather warning has been issued for Leeds as 50mph gusts of wind are expected to batter the city.

The Met Office is expecting some travel disruption as heavy rain combines with gales on Thursday (March 12). It has put in place a yellow alert from 5am to 8pm tomorrow.

A storm has not yet been named, but strong winds are expected in the next 24 hours. It is currently predicted that max gusts of 51mph will hit Leeds, but in some places it could reach 70 mph.

The warning reads: “Strong winds are expected during Thursday associated with an active weather front moving southeastwards across the UK.

“Gusts of 50-55 mph are expected widely, with some coastal locations and areas downwind of high ground seeing gusts of 60 mph or even 70 mph in a few places. Winds will ease from the north through the day.”

Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely, the forecaster has warned. It adds that some bus and train services will be affected, with some journeys taking longer than usual.

There is also potential for delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely. While some short term loss of power and other services is possible in places, according to the Met Office.

It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves.

The Met Office adds: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

“People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

“If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”

Heavy rain is expected from 3pm in Leeds on Thursday, according to the latest forecast. The downpours will continue throughout the rest of the evening and through to the early hours of Friday (March 13).
