Families planning an Alton Towers trip could save a surprising amount simply by booking online ahead of arrival, with weekday tickets dropping as low as £32

Here's a quick way to get a full day's access to Alton Towers for less than half the price of the usual walk-up cost.

Normally, visiting one of the most popular theme parks in the country costs £68 - but there's a very easy way to bring that price down.

Planning ahead is the most important thing when you're visiting the Staffordshire Moorlands attraction, because just driving over and parking up means you pay a premium for access to the park.

If you visit this page, and look for the "day passes" you can order it in advance you'll see much, much cheaper rates.

Importantly, you'll pay more on some days than you will on others. Unsurprisingly, weekdays are cheaper, and prices can be as low as £32 - that's a saving of £36.

But weekends aren't too bad, you'll usually pay £37, so you're still saving over £30 on the weekend price.

Once you get into high summer season, the minimum fee goes up a little, but only to around £34 on weekdays. In the school holidays, the minimum price creeps up to around £37, but it's still a saving.

The day passes give you access to all the key attractions in the park, including CBeebies Land, Sharkbait Reef by Sea Life, and The Gardens, but you'd need a separate pass for the Alton Towers Waterpark, and prices for that start at £18 for a day pass.

Another pass worth looking at is the new Parent and Toddler pass. Normally the walk-up prices are the same £68 for a parent and toddler, but these can drop as low as £29 when you order a pass online.

If you're staying in the area and you want to go back for a second visit, you can have a two day pass from £46 - saving you a lot of money on the usual £80 fee.

And also check out the annual pass - this gives you season-long access, any day of the week, as well as access to the seasonal themed events like Scarefest, for just £64.
