The Yoto player is giving children hours of screen-free stories while giving parents something equally valuable: a little peace and quiet.
There are plenty of things parents buy to keep children entertained, but the best things give parents something back; a little peace and quiet.
The Yoto player does just that though. Yoto is a screen-free audio player designed for children, allowing them to listen to stories, music and educational content without needing a tablet or television.
Children can also use it themselves. They simply pop an audio card into the player and then settle down to listen independently, making it a refreshingly simple alternative to handing over a screen.
I've seen first-hand how beloved the Yoto player is, as my nephews have one and frequently become absorbed in it. At aged two and four, they're both fascinated by the stories and love choosing what they want to hear, whether that's a familiar favourite or something new. Rather than asking what's on TV, they sit together and listen.
And for their mum, that's a huge part of the appeal. She loves the fact that they can spend a couple of hours completely enthralled in a story. There's no scrolling and no need for her to keep finding another programme to occupy them. They have something to keep them entertained while she gets a little breathing space.
That doesn't mean Yoto is simply a way of keeping children quiet though. Children are still actively engaging with something when using the player. Stories encourage them to listen, follow characters and use their imagination, while the audio format means they aren't glued to another screen.
The library also means there is plenty to keep children interested as they grow. Yoto now has more than 1,000 audio titles, ranging from much-loved children's favourites such as The Gruffalo and Paddington to music, educational content and longer stories.
There are even titles that can appeal to the grown-ups. The Yoto library includes music from iconic artists such as The Beatles and the Spice Girls, while the complete Harry Potter collection means there's plenty waiting for children once they're old enough for longer adventures.
That's another thing that makes Yoto particularly appealing as a children's gadget. It's not simply about filling time. It can give children stories and music they can discover independently, while giving parents a rare opportunity to step back for a while.
For parents, that little bit of peace and quiet can be priceless. At the same time, children have something they are truly enjoying so it feels like a win for everyone.
