Aston Villa now 'most likely destination’ for Leeds United transfer 'target'
The latest transfer talk from Elland Road as Leeds United look to make a late move during the January transfer window.
Leeds United are working hard to continue strengthening their squad in the final days of the January transfer window - and there has been a significant update on their pursuit of one reported target.
The Whites have been strongly linked with a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Jorgen Strand Larsen over the last week and were unsuccessful with an initial bid for the Norway international. Talks are said to be ongoing between the two clubs - although there is now said to be rival interest from Crystal Palace, who could be looking for a replacement for Jean-Phillipe Mateta as speculation over his future at Selhurst Park continues to make headlines.
The YEP understands boosting their options in the attacking third is the main priority for the Whites before Monday’s 7pm deadline - and that is why there has been no movement in a possible deal for Union Berlin defender Danilho Doekhi. The former Vitesse Arnhem centre-back was one of a number of players to be linked with a move to Elland Road earlier this month after opening up on a possible move away from his current club before the transfer window opened for business.
Speaking to Bild earlier in the season, the Dutch defender said: “I can’t say for sure whether I’ll still be here in the winter or if I’ll go. During the transfer window you always think about what could happen, especially when things get more serious. In the end I’m here and focusing on Union. There was a serious offer, but I ended up staying.
“The situation wasn’t easy. The competition had already started, but the transfer window was still open for another two weeks. It’s a difficult time for any footballer when you don’t know if you’ll still be there the following week. You can’t influence much yourself. If you have a good opportunity to leave, of course you don’t want to risk getting injured. But in my view, it’s not good to go into training or a game thinking about that.”
Speculation over his future with the Bundesliga club continued to increase as the January transfer window approached and Leeds were one of the first clubs mentioned as a possible suitor as they looked to secure a cut price deal. With Doekhi now in the final six months of his current contract and no progress being made in talks over a new agreement, the centre-back’s future is looking increasingly likely to be spent elsewhere.
Talk over a possible move to Elland Road has reduced in recent weeks and Bild are now reporting Aston Villa are now considering a move for Doekhi with suggestions his summer departure from his current club has been ‘confirmed’. They claim the defender will be ‘a significant loss’ for Union and describe Villa as ‘his most likely destination’ before the January transfer window comes to a close next week.
