Graham Smyth on what Leeds United fans can expect during final week of January transfer window

Leeds United will hope to add to their squad during the final week of the January transfer window.

There is just one week to go in the January transfer window - and Leeds United are still hoping to add one more new addition to their squad.

There has been just a solitary signing so far as the Whites landed Brighton and Hove Albion attacking midfielder Facundo Buonanotte on a loan deal after initially showing an interest in the Argentina international during the summer transfer window. That deal came to fruition after Buonanotte struggled to make an impact during a loan stint with Premier League rivals during the first half of the season.

There have been outgoings as winger Jack Harrison has joined Serie A strugglers Fiorentina on loan for the rest of the season and that move could become a permanent switch during the summer. Young prospect Harry Gray is also earning valuable senior experience after he joined League One club Rotherham United on loan and he will hope the Millers can help him take a successful step towards becoming a regular part of the senior setup at Elland Road.

The Whites have been linked with several players in recent days and there has been speculation suggesting a move for a striker and a left-back could be on the agenda for the final week of the transfer window. So what should Leeds fans expect over the coming days?

He told The Inside Elland Road podcast: “I think it’s more likely to be one than two, but it still could be zero. I think the thing to add here is there is a big thing at Leeds about not doing any deals you regret at the end of the season and I think that you’ve got to have that in the back of your mind when it comes to Strand Larsen as well. If this gets pushed and pushed and pushed fee-wise, you have to ask it worth stretching ourselves. You have to start asking questions like what if Calvert-Lewin stays fit and this guy gets five minutes here and there. Is he a player you see taking over from Calvert-Lewin next season or the season after? Is he a long-term project?

“The way it was phrased to me, even before the Strand-Larsen thing came out, was we are now squarely in the area of seeing what possibilities the market might give us. If it’s not Strand-Larsen, I think they’ll look at a nine and maybe another option. A left-back, the way Farke talked about it, it’s not quite the same. He’s been very open on the nine but he hasn’t been too open on the idea of a left-back. I have put on record that centre-back worries me, left-back worries me too and I felt my molars meet top and bottom when he said Gabriel Gudmundsson was struggling.”
