Leeds United Carabao Cup third round draw confirmed and what it means for Newcastle United clash
Leeds United look set to face Premier League opposition for the second time in the Carabao Cup.
Leeds United will travel to either Chelsea or Luton Town for their Carabao Cup third round tie next month.
The Whites booked their place in Wednesday night’s third round draw after beating Nottingham Forest 2-0 on Tuesday. Second-half goals from Daniel James and James Justin made it two wins across two competitions in four days at the City Ground.
Leeds were ball number 16 in the draw and immediately followed ball number 31, setting up a trip to either Chelsea or Luton. The two potential third round opponents face off at Stamford Bridge tonight.
Barring a major upset, Leeds look set to travel to Premier League opposition once again with Chelsea strong favourites to beat League One Luton. The fixtures are due to take place across two weeks next month, the week commencing September 7 and the following week commencing September 14.
Importantly for Leeds, Wednesday’s Carabao Cup draw also provided some clarity surrounding their Premier League meeting with Newcastle. Had either the Whites or Magpies been drawn against Champions League opposition, their Elland Road meeting on Monday September 14 would have been brought forward to Saturday September 12.
Newcastle will travel to Millwall in the third round while Leeds’ likely hosts Chelsea are not in Europe. Such late notice could have been a nightmare for fans but while the last-minute nature of official confirmation is far from ideal, the Premier League meeting will remain a Monday night clash.
