Leeds United submit Premier League appeal after Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal decision vs Newcastle

Leeds United’s second goal in a 4-1 win over Newcastle United was awarded to Jayden Bogle.

Leeds United have submitted an appeal to the Premier League Goal Accreditation Panel regarding their second goal of a 4-1 win against Newcastle United on Monday.

The goal was awarded to Jayden Bogle after he and Dominic Calvert-Lewin both jumped to head home a James Justin cross. Calvert-Lewin made first contact but replays appeared to show it deflecting off another head.

That head is believed to have been Bogle’s, with the Premier League Match Centre posting on X during the game: “The goal accreditation panel has adjudged Leeds’ 34th minute goal as a Bogle goal.” The YEP understands Leeds want the moment to be looked at again and have lodged an appeal.

For goals where the identity of the scorer is up for debate, a three-person panel at the Premier League Match Centre reviews the incident and identifies the final point of contact. Those panels are usually made up of a Pro Ref representative and two football experts.

Their call is passed on to the Premier League's digital team and official data partners Opta. Clubs are able to appeal the decision to the Premier League’s Goal Accreditation Appeals Panel, who will re-review the incident.

“At half-time the ref told me they’d given it to Jayden, that was the first I’d heard of it,” Calvert-Lewin told Sky Sports. “I didn’t even know he was there to be fair.

“I just got up early, watched the ball, bang and then just saw it go in the corner. It is what it is, I’ll take the assist I guess.”

Calvert-Lewin had seemingly come to terms with the decision after full-time but wasn’t so happy at the time. Also speaking to Sky Sports, Bogle said: “I didn’t know anything about it. Nothing about it!

“I said to the ref that I didn’t really fancy telling him, especially at half-time. It was no different after the game, he was a bit raging to be fair!

“But he’s happy with the points. He’s raging with the goal but happy with the points.”

In a post on his Instagram story after full-time, Calvert-Lewin jokingly labelled the decision ‘scandalous’ and claimed Bogle had admitted he never touched the ball. Leeds will now await the result of their appeal.
