Sean Dyche admits Leeds United have mastered Dominic Calvert-Lewin challenge he 'could never' manage

Leeds United have squeezed every ounce from their 11-goal free agent striker.

Former Everton manager Sean Dyche believes a change of environment and reduction in pressure has allowed Dominic Calvert-Lewin to flourish at Leeds United.

Calvert-Lewin left Everton as a free agent after nine years last summer, joining Leeds with question marks over his fitness record. The striker had started fewer than 20 Premier League games in three of his previous four seasons and hadn’t hit double figures for goals since 2020/21.

But since making his league debut for Leeds against Newcastle in August, Calvert-Lewin hasn’t missed a single top-flight game through injury, sitting out just once - a 2-2 draw at Chelsea - through illness. That consistency has helped the former Toffee bag 11 goals and earn an England call-up last month.

“We tried, we did all sorts of things to protect him, and tried to release the pressure off him to allow his body time to recover,” Dyche told talkSPORT. “He was close, but we could never get him full-out freedom to go sprint and play; he has found that at Leeds.

“Maybe a different environment, different crowd and different voices - that can affect a player. That has given him, maybe not a new lease of life, but allowed him to broaden his shoulders and allowed him a bit more freedom.

“At Everton, it was sort of, ‘when is he back?’ for a few years, and maybe that was a burden to carry.”

What has Dominic Calvert-Lewin said on his Leeds United fitness record?

That respectable 11-goal tally comes despite scoring just once in the league since early February. The 29-year-old bagged the bulk of his efforts through the winter, with a run of seven in six appearances earning him December’s Premier League Player of the Month award.

One of those seven goals came in a comeback 1-1 draw at Brentford, with Calvert-Lewin rising highest to head home a Willy Gnonto cross on 82 minutes. And speaking after earning that point, the Leeds forward spoke candidly about the injury narrative, insisting he’d never felt fitter then his spell in West Yorkshire.

“I’m feeling good,” Calvert-Lewin told Sky Sports. “I think the performances are speaking for themselves at the moment. I’m feeling good, feeling healthy. I think this is the fittest I’ve been in a long time and I've worked extremely hard to get in this position.

“When you get a certain narrative around you and you’re tarred with a certain brush, it's quite hard to shake it. For me it was always about being mentally tough and hanging in there at certain points. Then just step by step, day by day putting performances together. All of a sudden, the tide starts to turn and you start scoring goals, that's the life of a centre-forward.”
