Potential Leeds United cash boost as transfer talks underway for £3.8m academy exit
A portion of any profits from the potential transfer will be owed to Leeds United.
Leeds United could receive a welcome cash boost this month if fresh interest in one academy graduate turns into a January transfer.
Charlie Cresswell has attracted plenty of attention since swapping Leeds for Toulouse in a £3.8million deal back in July 2024. The centre-back left Elland Road in search of regular football and got his wish in France, racking up 48 Ligue 1 appearances in 18 months.
This season, Cresswell has played every available league minute for eighth-placed Toulouse, scoring three times, and the 23-year-old’s form has fuelled January transfer interest. The latest European club to be linked with a move for the former Leeds centre-back are VfL Wolfsburg.
Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg named Cresswell as a potential target for Wolfsburg on Wednesday, with the Bundesliga outfit prioritising defensive reinforcements this month. They have also been linked to Union Berlin’s Danilho Doekhi, someone Leeds have looked at previously.
Doekhi and Brentford’s Kristoffer Ajer were on the radar of Wolfsburg chiefs but having failed to progress with either, Plettenberg reports via X that ‘focus’ is now on Cresswell. He adds that ‘concrete negotiations’ are underway for the Toulouse defender who could swap France for Germany this month if an agreement is reached.
Cresswell is also believed to be a target for one of Leeds’ Premier League relegation rivals this month. West Ham United attempted to sign the England Under-21 international over the summer and with defensive additions needed, he’s been identified as a ‘top transfer target’ by London Stadium chiefs according to The Athletic.
Leeds United due cash boost if Charlie Cresswell moves
That report also provided detail on the stance of Toulouse, who are thought to want €25m (£21.8m) for Cresswell if they are to sell this month. The French club are under no obligation to cash in, with the centre-backs current contract running until summer 2028, and can hold out for whatever fee they want.
Should Cresswell leave Toulouse this month, then Leeds could welcome a multi-million pound cash injection. While their £3.8m sale now looks quite low based on current form, Elland Road chiefs also inserted a sell-on clause which, as reported by the YEP, entitles them to 15 per cent of any future profits.
A £21.8m sale would see Toulouse generate a whopping £18m profit on their initial £3.8m outlay. But with 15 percent of that profit margin heading to Elland Road, Leeds could bank an extra £2.7m - taking their total income from the sale of Cresswell up to £6.5m.
With Leeds managing director Robbie Evans revealing in September the club are at the limit of their permitted three-year losses as per Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), a potential seven-figure boost could prove significant this month. The Whites are in the market for reinforcements themselves with the loan market being explored.
A £2.7m boost could, in theory, put them in a much stronger position when it comes to managing the wages of a player from a big European club, for example. While it could also contribute towards the first portion of a permanent transfer fee if something suitable arises.
