Leeds United transfer market opportunity & Dominic Calvert-Lewin inspiration behind Jorgen Strand Larsen bid
Leeds United will feel an opportunity to take advantage of the transfer market regarding Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.
Leeds United could land a major transfer win by launching their pursuit of Jorgen Strand Larsen during a difficult period for him and Wolves.
The Whites remain in talks over a potential January move for Strand Larsen, having lodged an opening bid earlier this week. Elland Road chiefs have seemingly been encouraged enough to follow up a recent enquiry, despite the obvious caveats regarding financial demands and Premier League competition.
Leeds are at the limit of their three-year maximum permitted losses as per Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) but as managing director Robbie Evans hinted in September, certain levers could be pulled if the right market opportunity surfaced. It feels like Strand Larsen is that market opportunity.
Wolves are believed to want around £40million for Strand Larsen, which might seem steep for a striker with no open-play Premier League goals this season, but just six months ago they were rejecting offers worth far more. Newcastle United went up to £55m following a 14-goal haul in 2024/25 but even that was deemed insufficient.
Since that rejected bid, Wolves have collected just eight Premier League points and look destined for relegation to the Championship, while Strand Larsen’s sole contribution to their survival bid was a penalty against Burnley. The Norwegian hasn’t even started a top-flight match since December 20.
Some might therefore see a striker simply not worth £40m but Elland Road chiefs see an opportunity to take advantage of the market. Strand Larsen is in a difficult moment at Wolves but had he continued last season’s form to lead a survival bid at Molineux, the chances of him being available to Leeds would be close to zero.
And there is no reason not to believe Leeds can return him to 2024/25 levels, should a deal get done. It has been a tactic of 49ers Enterprises ever since they took full control at Elland Road, jumping on good players in not-so-good moments.
Leeds United’s transfer success with similar market opportunities
Dominic Calvert-Lewin left Everton as a free agent in the summer having scored just three goals in 26 Premier League appearances during the prior campaign. That was his second-worst goals-per-game average since joining the Toffees in 2016 and fitness questions hung heavy as the search for a new club started.
Leeds know they took a gamble on Calvert-Lewin but trusted their medical staff to keep him fit, while manager Daniel Farke was backed to get the out-of-form striker back firing with a more direct style of play. He’s on nine goals in 20 games, his best-ever goals-per-game ratio, and just won December’s Premier League Player of the Month.
Ethan Ampadu was snapped up in 2023 fresh off the back of a third consecutive relegation out on loan from Chelsea. He was Farke’s first signing following Leeds’ own demotion and a £7m deal was done for the midfielder who’d endured difficult spells at Sheffield United, Venezia and Spezia.
Fast forward two-and-a-half years and Ampadu is very much a Premier League-quality midfielder, looking right at home against the likes of Liverpool, Crystal Palace and former club Chelsea. That £7m fee is being discussed as a bargain.
Jayden Bogle and James Justin were both deemed not good enough for the Premier League by sections of the Sheffield United and Leicester City fanbases respectively, but look at them now. Good players in difficult moments. An opportunity to take advantage of the market.
There is no guarantee Strand Larsen will rediscover his 2024/25 form, or even if Leeds can come to an agreement with Wolves. But Elland Road chiefs clearly feel they can extract the best out of their target. Succeed, and even £40m could look a great piece of business further down the line.
