Max Wober sets out Leeds United summer return hope with transfer admission
The Austrian defender is currently set to return to Leeds United following an unsuccessful Werder Bremen loan spell.
Leeds United defender Max Wober understands he won’t be in particularly high demand this summer following a season spent mostly on the sidelines.
Wober joined Werder Bremen on a season-long loan in July last year but played just three matches during the 2025/26 campaign. He suffered a hamstring injury on debut in August and didn’t feature again in competitive football until April 26, thanks in part to a fresh calf muscle tear suffered while playing a friendly during the winter break.
Werder Bremen are believed to have an option to buy Wober this summer but following a loan spell in which he has barely played, that feels unlikely. As things stand, the defender is set for a second return to Leeds, having previously left for Borussia Monchengladbach in 2023.
Asked what discussions have taken place over his future, Wober told DAB Der Audiobeweis: “So far, relatively little. I'm pretty sure I won't be the most sought-after player at Leeds United anymore. That much is clear to me. We'll see how things develop.”
Wober’s winter injury proved to be much more serious than initially feared. What was believed to be a calf strain turned into a muscle tear with tendon involvement and the on-loan Leeds man was unable to prove fit enough to make the Austria squad for this summer’s World Cup.
The defender will have one year remaining on his Whites deal upon returning to Thorp Arch this summer. For him, the most important thing is getting back into some form of training to build fitness following a dismal campaign.
“I'm assuming I'll return for pre-season training as normal,” he added. “And I think after an injury like that, you simply need training sessions with the team, friendlies where you get that feeling in your body again that you're fit, that everything's working, and that everything's holding up.
“So it's really important for me to participate in preseason training again. And then we'll see what happens next, what Leeds’ plan is, what's happening in the transfer market. Things can change drastically in football. So I'll just take it as it comes.”
