Whitby named Yorkshire's most independent seaside town - full top 10 results
Whitby has been crowned Yorkshire's top coastal destination for independent shops, cafés, and pubs in a comprehensive national study
Whitby has been officially crowned Yorkshire's most independent seaside town following extensive new research analysing more than 20,000 coastal businesses across the United Kingdom.
The study, conducted by holiday accommodation platform Simply Sea Views, evaluated 50 of the UK's most popular coastal destinations.
By examining the proportion of independently owned businesses alongside Google customer ratings and business density per resident, the study generated a definitive ‘Independence Index’ out of 100.
Whitby finished third overall in the entire UK, earning an impressive score of 82.3, beaten only by the Cornish hotspots of Falmouth (1st) and St Ives (2nd), making the North Yorkshire historic port the highest-ranking destination in the North of England.
How Yorkshire's Coastal Rivals Fare

Whitby comfortably outpaced every other Yorkshire coastal town included in the study, highlighting how well its historic high streets have resisted the march of major national retail chains.
Its score of 82.3 was almost 26 points higher than neighbouring Scarborough, and more than three times higher than Redcar.
- Whitby - 3rd nationally (Independence Score: 82.3)
- Scarborough - 20th nationally (Independence Score: 56.6)
- Bridlington - 26th nationally (Independence Score: 50.6)
- Redcar - 48th nationally (Independence Score: 26.3)
The findings suggest that while other regional resorts have seen high streets increasingly dominated by multi-site operators and chain outlets, Whitby’s local business community remains exceptionally resilient.
Inside Whitby’s Independent High Street
The study revealed that Whitby’s food and drink sector is almost entirely run by local, independent operators rather than national hospitality conglomerates.
Nearly every café in the town is independently owned, while pubs and restaurants show similarly dominant figures:
- Cafés: 97.1% independently owned (Average customer rating: 4.64 / 5 stars)
- Pubs: 94.7% independently owned (Average customer rating: 4.49 / 5 stars)
- Restaurants: 92.7% independently owned (Average customer rating: 4.56 / 5 stars)
- Shops: 76.7% independently owned (Average customer rating: 4.36 / 5 stars)
With 196 independent businesses serving a local population of roughly 13,600, Whitby boasts one of the highest concentrations of independent traders per resident anywhere on the British coastline.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for Simply Sea Views said: "Everyone has a firm opinion about which seaside towns still feel like proper seaside towns, and which have turned into rows of the same shops you would find in any city centre. This research puts some real data behind that.
"Whitby's result shows just how strong its independent business community remains. Nearly every café, pub and restaurant is independently owned, helping it outperform every other Yorkshire seaside town and finish among the very best in Britain."
Methodology: The Simply Sea Views index analysed 20,000+ businesses across 50 UK seaside towns using OpenStreetMap and Google Places data, scoring each destination out of 100 based on the proportion of non-chain businesses, customer reviews, and local population density.
