'Morley Wants Its Arts Festival Back': Organisers confirm 2027 return after overwhelming return success

The return of the festival saw more than 600 visitors attend its rebirth this Bank Holiday weekend

A grassroots revival of the Morley Arts Festival has been hailed a resounding success after drawing more than 600 visitors across a packed three-day weekend - prompting organisers to confirm its official return for June 2027.

Organised by Morley Live CIC, the self-funded community festival welcomed an extraordinarily broad crowd, with attendees ranging from 27 days old to 79 years old.

The weekend featured a talk from newly crowned national champion Town Crier Steven Holt, exclusive archive screenings from the Yorkshire Film Archive, live art from five gallery exhibitors, and performances from 20 live music acts, local students, and open-mic performers.

"I was running the festival from open to close all three days and am still overwhelmed by the sheer amount of support and positivity we received," said organiser Annie Forber. "The energy of those who came absolutely kept me going.

“Responses both in person and on survey sheets were that people were so happy to see the event back, that they wanted more events of this nature for Morley, and were grateful for our efforts."

The festival's inclusive approach proved a massive hit, featuring two drag performances - including a widely praised children’s storytime session, alongside grassroots platform opportunities for emerging regional talent.

Solo artist Nathaniel Murphy, who made his live debut at the event, shared on Instagram: "First time I have ever performed my solo music and couldn’t be happier! Thank you for providing space for new artists and giving me the opportunity to perform."

Local indie band These Beggars also praised the atmosphere, calling the effort to bring back the festival "really inspiring" after being cheered through three encores during their Sunday set.

Following the overwhelming response, organisers have officially set the dates for next year's event as June 12–13, 2027, and are currently awaiting town council approval to expand into outdoor spaces.

"We've already had artists and performers enquire about being involved next year," Annie added.

"Being able to see that impact has got us so ready for diving back into planning an even bigger event as a thank you."
