Olivier Award-winning Cassa Pancho's Ballet Black to bring 25th anniversary tour to Leeds this summer
Celebrating a quarter-century of "punching above its weight," Cassa Pancho’s world-renowned company returns with a powerful new double bill.
Since its founding in 2001, Ballet Black has grown from a bold idea into a cultural powerhouse that has transformed the landscape of British ballet by championing artists of Black and Asian descent.
Known for a repertory of deeply resonant and award-winning works, the troupe has maintained a long history of prestigious performances, including a regular presence at the Royal Opera House since 2005.

This adventurous company has consistently punched well above its weight, creating impactful choreography that explores everything from African ancestry to the complex state of the world today.
The company make their return to Leeds to celebrate their 25th anniversary with a program that perfectly balances their celebrated history with a bold look at the future, with a special anniversary mixed program, featuring two distinct, impactful works.
Ingoma, devised in 2019, is a piece inspired by the 1946 South African miners’ strike. Choreographed by former company dancer Mthuthuzeli November, it captures the resilience of Black miners and won both the 2020 Olivier Award and the Black British Theatre Award for Best Dance Production.
A brand new commission from ‘Alvin Ailey royalty,’ Hope Boykin, will also take place; ...all towards hope is a celebratory piece from the UK choreographic debutant and serves as a vibrant tribute to the company’s 25-year journey.
The two-time Bessie Award winner explained the inspiration behind the new commission: “I make work and create environments from personal and lived experiences. This new piece is a vibrant tribute to the company’s journey and a bold look towards its future”
Artistic Director Cassa Pancho describes the company's strength as its diversity of repertoire, noting that "no two ballets are alike" and that the ultimate goal is to "always put on a show that makes you think, feel and want to return again and again"
Ballet Black will perform at Leeds Playhouse, located at Playhouse Square, Quarry Hill, on May 8. For full ticket details and to access Ballet Black’s further 2026 schedule, you can visit the official website of the company.
