Leeds Dragon Boat Race returns to Roundhay Park after cancellation as fundraising nears £850,000
Almost 500 rowers will make a splash for cash this weekend as one of the city's most spectacular fundraising events returns to the waters of Roundhay Park.
Waterloo Lake at Roundhay Park will be transformed into a sea of colour as 48 teams - each consisting of ten rowers and a drummer - go head-to-head in the annual Martin House Children’s Hospice Dragon Boat Race.
The event is particularly anticipated this year following the heartbreak of 2024, when the race had to be cancelled due to a blue-green algae outbreak on the lake.
Now in its 18th year, the much-loved event is on the verge of a historic milestone. Since its debut in 2008, the race has raised a staggering £848,513 for Martin House.
With this weekend's fundraising already off to a flying start, organisers expect to smash through the £850,000 barrier.

While the racing is fast and frantic, the heart of the event lies in the personal stories of those taking part; the two teams this year are rowing in memory of children who were supported by the hospice’s specialist care.
Team Evelyn, led by Caroline and Michael Lambert, is named after their daughter, who died aged just seven months. The Lamberts have been tireless supporters of Martin House, raising over £120,000 to date, with their boat already contributing over £2,300 to this year's total.
Meanwhile, Esta’s Stars are fundraising in memory of Esta Alina High, who passed away in late 2023 at five months old. Her family, who found comfort in the hospice’s specialised ‘Snowflake Suite’ following her death, have already raised more than £5,600.
Their participation highlights the vital, 24/7 support Martin House provides to families across Yorkshire during their darkest moments.
It isn't just about the action on the lake either, as Roundhay Park will host a full festival of entertainment starting from 10am, including a tug of war contest, a family funfair, and a variety of food and makers’ stalls. For those looking to clear out some space at home, a Martin House donation station will also be on-site to collect preloved items.
Headline sponsor Haribo will once again be supporting the event, providing prizes for the top fundraisers and the best fancy dress, so spectators should keep an eye out for some truly creative costumes among the rowing crews.
Maddie Massey, special events team manager at Martin House, said: "The Dragon Boat Race is always a great spectacle. After last year’s cancellation, we’re so excited to bring the event back bigger and better than ever.
“Every pound raised will help us continue providing specialist care to families when they need it most."
When is the Leeds Dragon Boat Race taking place?
The event takes place April 26 at Waterloo Lake in Roundhay Park.
Racing is scheduled to begin at 10am and will continue throughout the afternoon, culminating in a grand final to crown the 2026 champions.
How can I support Martin House?
