Under the direction of choral director Matthew Lazenby, the choir aims to highlight a deeper, more contemplative side of Rutter, who is often best known for his upbeat anthems and Christmas carols.

“The Requiem is a way we can all reflect and pay our respects musically to family and friends who are no longer with us,” explains Matthew.

“Members of the choir and audience regularly think of someone dear to them while performing or hearing such a piece.”

Joining the choir as featured soloist for the Rutter Requiem is acclaimed Leeds-based soprano Louise Alp, a prominent voice across the region’s classical scene who performs regularly with ensembles including the Leodis Consort and Pusey Consort.

Dvořák’s Mass in D major completes the November programme, serving as a bright, sacred complement to Rutter’s reflective work.

Following the autumn concert, the society will host its annual festive showcase on December 8, continuing a long-standing tradition alongside the hugely talented YEP Brass Ensemble.

The Christmas concert will feature joint performances of well-known carols alongside choral works by acclaimed contemporary composer Sarah Quartel.

“Being part of Horsforth Choral Society means members who share a love of singing can meet weekly to share their joy for music and enjoy one another's friendship,” adds Matthew.

“Those who come to our concerts can expect a very warm welcome, wonderful choral classics, and free refreshments!”
