Acclaimed Leeds chamber choir St Peter’s Singers will kick off their new concert season with a 90-minute afternoon performance of 19th and 20th-century choral classics at St Mary’s Church in Whitkirk

One of Leeds’ most established choral ensembles is set to open its brand-new concert season with an afternoon showcase in Whitkirk - and promises that audiences will be home in time for tea.

St Peter’s Singers will perform A Choral Feast of Romantic Masterpieces at St Mary’s Church on Selby Road, bringing together landmark 19th and early 20th-century music in a relaxed 90-minute format.

Founded in 1977 as the resident chamber choir of St Peter-at-Leeds (Leeds Minster), the choir has built a strong reputation across the region for its extensive repertoire of sacred and secular music.

The opening half of the programme features the warmth of Gerald Finzi’s My Spirit Sang All Day, alongside Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Linden Lea and The Turtle Dove, and Charles Villiers Stanford’s The Blue Bird.

The first half also includes works by Anton Bruckner and Déodat de Séverac, concluding with Johannes Brahms’ powerful setting of scripture, Warum ist das Licht gegeben.

The second half features Hubert Parry’s Songs of Farewell - a moving collection of six pieces composed during the First World War exploring themes of faith, mortality, and hope.

"This programme brings together some wonderful music, from the joyful simplicity of Finzi and Vaughan Williams to the more reflective works by Bruckner, Brahms and Parry," said Alex Woodrow, Director of Music.

"We hope people will enjoy hearing this music in the beautiful setting of St Mary’s and that the concert will be an opportunity for regular concertgoers and newcomers alike to experience the pleasure of live choral singing as we begin our new season."

St Peter’s Singers perform at St Mary’s Church (Selby Road, Whitkirk, Leeds, LS15 0AA) on October 17 from 4.30pm to 6pm (doors open at 4:00 pm), with tickets priced at £10 for adults and free for students and under-18s - available in advance via The St Peter’s Singers website or on the door subject to availability.
