Rave Culture: How a 90s Underground Revolution is Taking Over Hyde Park Picture House this week
The city’s iconic Hyde Park Picture House and Jumbo Records team up this weekend for an exclusive Leeds premiere screening and a live Q&A with Yorkshire electronic music royalty
Before it became a global multi-billion-pound industry, electronic music was an act of pure, unadulterated rebellion.
Born in the suffocating economic landscape of late-1980s Thatcherite Britain, a generation of youth locked out of the mainstream found their voice in abandoned factories, rain-soaked fields, and the syncopated, high-energy chaos of breakbeat.
This week, Leeds film and music fans are getting a front-row seat to that explosive history.

As part of the ongoing Sound & Vision season - a powerhouse collaboration between two of Leeds’ most enduring cultural titans, Hyde Park Picture House and Jumbo Records - the city is hosting the exclusive premiere screening of ‘Rave Culture: A New Era.’
Directed by Eduardo Cubillo Blasco, this 87-minute documentary is an electrifying dive into the heart of the UK rave movement, tracking the sonic evolution of breakbeat -a genre that shattered the rules by fusing the mechanical, raw drive of Detroit techno with the soulful warmth of Chicago house and the aggressive energy of New York hip-hop.
Through previously unreleased archival footage and deep-underground interviews, the film features a massive line-up of electronic music royalty who shaped the culture, including Goldie & The Prodigy’s Leeroy Thornhill, Orbital, Altern-8, Slipmatt, and Jungle and drum & bass pioneers DJ Hype, Fabio, General Levy, and The Ragga Twins
Making this premiere unmissable for electronic music purists, the screening will be followed by a live Q&A with Gez Varley.
As a founding member of the legendary Yorkshire duo LFO, Varley’s inclusion connects the film’s global narrative directly back to the local pavement.
Alongside the late Mark Bell, Varley helped define the foundational "Bleep Techno" sound right here in the North, releasing seminal tracks on Warp Records that forever changed the trajectory of UK bass music.
When is ‘Rave Culture: A New Era’ screening at Hyde Park Picture House?
The highly anticipated Leeds premiere of the documentary takes place this weekend on 27 June, with the lights going down at 18:10, with seat reservations open now through Hyde Park Picture House’s website.
Because this is a special Sound & Vision event presented in collaboration with Jumbo Records, attendees should note that standard free membership tickets cannot be used for this screening, though regular member discounts still apply for 35mm and 70mm cardholders.
The film runs for 1 hour and 27 minutes, contains strobe lighting, and will be immediately followed by the live Q&A session with LFO’s Gez Varley.
