From Empire Café pitstops to Beastie Boys arrival anthems, Liverpool alt-rockers SISTERS give us the lowdown on their Leeds habits ahead of next week’s gig

Ahead of their headline date at Wharf Chambers next week, Liverpool alt-rock group SISTERS sat down with us for What We Do In Leeds - our quickfire guide to how visiting artists navigate our city’s food, venues, and live crowds.

Formed in Liverpool in 2025, SISTERS are a five-piece indie/alt outfit bringing together musicians from Brooklyn, Baltimore, Switzerland, and the UK.

Combining atmospheric synths and heavy basslines with a grunge-inflected post-punk edge, the band - comprising vocalist Gigi, drummer James, bassist Odelia, synth player Mira, and guitarist Lewis - has generated steady momentum following the release of their debut EP and recent single ‘Creatures’.

But for locals looking ahead to their show next week, what are their points of reference as a touring band in the city?

You’re making that final approach into Leeds City Centre - what is your arrival song of choice, and why?

"We’ve been to Leeds a fair bit, but I’ve only really managed to carve the path to and from the work I was there to do. So when we come to Leeds, I think about getting to work, which is why I would choose ‘Mark on the Bus’ by the Beastie Boys.

“It’s a groovy song about getting the job done, and Leeds is a pretty groovy city, so I think it fits quite well."

But honestly, what is the algorithm actually suggesting you have lined up to play instead?

"Recently I've been playing loads of ear, geese, Santigold, mary in the junkyard, Hello Mary, David Bowie, Water From Your Eyes, and Derby."

To kill time in Leeds before or after soundchecks, where can we mostly find you?

"As I wander the city in the time between soundcheck and showtime, we find ourselves looking for the best food and milkshakes — I love milkshakes so much.

“For food, I love Empire Cafe. It’s just a classic and I always find myself there. As for milkshakes, I go to Fat Annie’s every time."

You’re looking for some food before taking to the stage — what is the essential eatery in Leeds you’ll be ordering from?

“Ah - I just answered this accidentally!”

Breakfast rolls around the next day, though — will you be returning to that establishment, or is there an ‘essential’ breakfast place in Leeds you’ll be heading to?

"I have actually never had breakfast in Leeds… but I have had someone from Leeds make me breakfast, and it was pretty good, so I would be curious to give it a try!"

You’ve suddenly had a career change and become a Tour Guide for Leeds — what three landmarks or activities would you suggest based on your own experiences?

"To be honest, they would all be music venues simply because music is what I love and what I do. The first place would obviously be Wharf Chambers, which is actually where we are playing in Leeds.

“But I would also recommend The Key Club, Brudenell Social Club, and Headrow House."

What local musicians would you recommend to your closest friends to check out, and where can they be found?

"Definitely check out Lavender Gray. They are joining us on July 29th and we are so lucky to have them. There is also Rat Pakk, Kaeya, and a special shout-out to Wooshy World, who designs incredible fashion pieces."

If you’ve played here before: What is it about Leeds that brings you back to perform time and time again?

"Honestly, it’s the crowd. I’ve never actually played this city with SISTERS before; I play bass in a few other bands, and SISTERS is only about a year old, but I am over the moon about it simply because of how good the crowds are. I love people who dance, take up space, and visibly enjoy the music.

“It’s a beautiful thing and unfortunately a bit rare these days, especially on local scenes."
