Strong Leeds United transfer message as Liverpool legend lauds 'incredible' summer signing
Leeds United’s summer transfer business has caught the eye of a former Liverpool favourite.
Leeds United fought off heavy competition to land ‘incredible’ free agent winger Harry Wilson, believes Liverpool legend Phil Thompson.
Wilson enjoyed arguably his best performance in a Leeds shirt during Sunday’s 4-2 comeback win over his former club, Liverpool. The 29-year-old was one of four game-changing half-time substitutions, introduced alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Brenden Aaronson and Sean Longstaff with the Whites 2-0 down.
Aaronson, Longstaff and Calvert-Lewin all got on the scoresheet - the latter twice - but Wilson was equally impactful, picking up great positions on the right and driving at Liverpool with every opportunity. The Welshman is yet to open his Whites account following a free transfer from Fulham but his quality is in no doubt.

“He had a great season last year,” former Liverpool and England defender Thompson told LFCTV of Wilson. “I suspect there would have been a few teams wanting to sign him, so for him to go to Leeds, I just think it’s a great acquisition.
“It’s not just the goals he scores, it’s the assists as well. He is a player who last season played with confidence, and he’s a real threat when he’s at the top of his game. He’s incredible to watch at times. He’s got great quality.
“When he is playing with that confidence, he can be a real problem. He will try things that others won’t think to do. He has the ability to pull it off as well.”
Wilson registered 10 goals and seven assists for Fulham last season, his most productive top-flight campaign and enough to earn him the Cottagers’ Player of the Season Award. Leeds will hope that form carries through to the 2026/27 campaign with Sunday’s performance a promising sign.
Daniel Farke’s side looked completely different following the half-time introduction of Wilson and others, turning a passive performance into one full of energy. It was also the best they’ve looked in the final third, which is no coincidence given it was the first appearance for Calvert-Lewin.
Wilson and his teammates will now head back to the UK and have the best part of a week to prepare for RB Leipzig at Elland Road on Saturday. Leeds then face Manchester United in Dublin and FC Augsburg back home next week before kicking off their Premier League campaign at Nottingham Forest on August 22.
