Belfast punk legends Stiff Little Fingers return to Leeds this week for their annual ‘Raise Your Voice’ tour - and bring with them a high-octane support act and 40 years of anthems.

For many in Leeds, March isn’t just about St Patrick’s Day; it’s about the return of Stiff Little Fingers.

Fronted by the iconic Jake Burns, the band has a long-standing love affair with the O2 Academy Leeds, and tomorrow night (March 12) promises to be another sweat-soaked celebration of classic punk.

Forming in Belfast in 1977 at the height of The Troubles, the band’s output was a survival manual; while their peers in London were singing about ‘Anarchy in the UK’ as a concept, Jake Burns and company were writing about a ‘Suspect Device’ and an ‘Alternative Ulster’ they encountered on their own doorsteps.

If you've ever shouted along to a Green Day anthem or a Dropkick Murphys chorus, you are hearing the echoes of SLF.

Billie Joe Armstrong famously stood side-stage at their shows to study Burns’ delivery, and the band's influence on the ‘independent’ music scene is legendary; their debut, Inflammable Material, was the first-ever independent album to break the UK Top 20.

The band also hand-picked the support act for the evening - the frantic British punk duo The Meffs.

Jake Burns himself has admitted to being "blown away" by the pair, whose debut album, What A Life, has been making serious waves.

If you want to see the future of the genre, you need to be in the room early for this one.

What time are the doors opening at for Stiff Little Fingers this week?

Doors for Stiff Little Fingers at the O2 Academy Leeds tomorrow are officially scheduled to open at 7pm, while The Meffs, are expected to take the stage shortly after doors, typically around 7:30 pm or 7:45 pm.

The night will conclude with a strict venue curfew of 11pm.

What is the bag policy for the O2 Academy Leeds?

The venue operates a strict security policy to ensure everyone’s safety.

The ‘golden rule’ for the O2 Academy Leeds is that you are only permitted to bring one small bag per person. This bag must be no larger than A4 size (approximately 29.7cm high x 21cm wide x 15cm deep).

It is important to note that the venue does not have a cloakroom for large luggage or rucksacks, so if you arrive with a bag that exceeds these dimensions, you will be turned away at the door. - however you can store bags across the city by virtue of using the Stasher app.

What should I bring with me?

To avoid blushes at the door, remember to bring with you tomorrow:

  • Your Ticket: Whether it's a physical printout or a digital E-ticket on your phone, have it ready before you reach the front of the line.
  • Valid Photo ID: The venue operates a Challenge 25 policy at the bars. A UK driving licence or passport is your best bet to prove you’re old enough for that pint.
  • Card or Contactless Payment: The O2 Academy is largely a cashless venue, so ensure your phone or card is ready for merch and drinks.

What should I leave at home?

To really avoid blushes at the door, leave the following items at home:

  • Professional Cameras: Leave the DSLRs and detachable lenses at home. Selfie sticks, tripods, and GoPros are also banned to keep sightlines clear.
  • Outside Food and Drink: No cans, bottles, or snacks are allowed. If you have a medical requirement, you must email the venue in advance for authorisation.
  • Aerosols and Large Liquids: Perfumes, deodorants, or hairsprays over 100ml will be confiscated.
  • Safety Risks: This includes ‘legal’ highs, laser pointers, air horns, flagpoles, and heavy wallet chains or excessively studded belts that could cause injury, and anything that could be considered a weapon.
  • Glass Items: Even small glass bottles of fragrance or makeup are generally not permitted
  • Outside promotional material
