Yorkshire Wind Orchestra to celebrate 30th anniversary with homecoming concert in Roundhay

From the grand halls of Leeds to three decades of regional excellence, the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra is celebrating a monumental milestone this weekend

What began as a one-off gathering of 250 musicians at Leeds Town Hall has grown into a three-decade legacy of pioneering music.

This month, the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra (YWO) returns to its roots to celebrate 30 years of woodwind, brass, and percussion excellence.

Having established itself as one of England's leading community wind ensembles since its inception.

Originally formed to mark the Centenary of the Leeds City Charter, the dedicated ensemble has spent 30 years championing living composers and nurturing regional musical talent.

The orchestra’s identity has been largely shaped by Keiron Anderson, who has served as the guiding force and conductor since joining the project in 1994; under his leadership, the group has gained international recognition for tackling ambitious repertoire, including the world premiere of the concert version of Karl Jenkins' ‘The Armed Man.’

For their 30th anniversary performance at St Edmund's Church in Roundhay this weekend, the orchestra will revisit works of special historical significance to the ensemble. The programme includes a return to Bacchus on Blue Ridge, a piece that was featured in the orchestra's very first concert.

The ensemble will also celebrate the legacy of Dawn Flight, which received its first civilian performance through the YWO. Additionally, the concert will feature the first-ever live performance of Keiron’s arrangement of Happy Birthday, a work previously only performed via video for the orchestra's 25th anniversary.

As the ensemble marks this major anniversary, they shared: "We are delighted to share this milestone with you and look forward to 30 more years of pioneering wind ensemble repertoire".
